Fishing Area
The 450 kilometers of coastline that separate Vinaros from Torrevieja offer so much to fish. However, the epicenter of fishing in Valencia is Cabo San Antonio. The respective fishing ports of Denia and Javea are strategically placed for big game fishing, deep sea fishing, sport fishing and deep sea trolling. The great advantage that these ports have is that the fishing grounds are close by.
Passing through the Ibiza Channel is mandatory for the large predators like the bluefin tuna and the albacore that go to spawn around the Balearic Islands and the Leon Gulf. The respective ports of Jávea and Denia are strategically well-located for big game fishing, since only 20 miles from the coast, you can find depths of 1000 meters. To give you a better idea: from Alicante we have to sail about 40 miles to find depths of 1,000 meters. The best months for fishing are June, July and August.
Generalizing a lot and without wanting to discredit, we observe that the sea bottom, understood as that between the Delta del Ebro and that of Cabo de San Antonio, is mostly sandy. As we get closer to Denia, leaving behind the plains of Valencia, the terrain becomes more and more mountainous. This geographical contrast can also be observed under the sea: around Cabo de Sant Antonio, the sea bottoms are not so sandy, instead resemble muddy foothills with loose rocks; sea bottoms that are very attractive for deep sea trolling.
Further north, off the Castellón coast are the Columbretes Islands. Here the fishing ban has helped the Marine Reserve to become a jewel, in both flora and fauna. We applaud the existence of these Marine Reserves because they are act as a refuge where the fish can spawn and reproduce in peace, and at the same time they nourish the nearby areas with fish...
The rocky sea bottoms of Cabo de San Antonio give refuge to predators such as dentex, amberjack, and the leerfish, or bluefish. The months of January, February, March and April are especially productive for the large dentex when deep sea trolling. The medium sized specimens are caught until the month of August. Later, small bluefish, Atlantic bonito, dolphinfish, etc. make their entrance and stay until the end of September and October.
