Tony, captain from our Fishing Charter in La Gomera is preparing the blue marlin and tuna season. There’s quite some baitfish which is very good, because the big guys will arrive soon to chase them.
“… I would let you know whats happening here in La Gomera, fish wise! Well both Jason and I have been out looking for Tuna on a few occassions but although all the signs are here so far no luck...this year there is lots of bait, and dolphins and whales enjoying the food. The Tuna will stay as will the Marlin because of this great quantity of bait, in fact I live in front of Playa de Santiago and every night pro Tuna boats come from as far away as Lanzarote to fill their live bait tanks. We just need to be patient and keep trying until the predators arrive. We both have been bottom fishing and sama (called snapper in New Zealand) have been taken of good sizes and we on my boat also released some nice Tope. On Sunday coming I want to try again for Tuna and will let you know if they are here ...take care, Tony"
In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote fishing has been good in April. Our Fishing Charter in Lanzarote has been fishing a lot for big Amberjack and Sama with life bait.
"... we have caught Skip jack tuna, Bonito (Atlantic Bonito) and amberjack. The pics are from Tuesday the 10th, when Henrik and Martin had a good day of fishing. First we caught the bait, Mackerel and several large squid. Then we used mackerel and the squid, and we caught and released a mid-sized amberjack, and a bonito. On our way back to the port we caught a nice skip jack tuna."
In Fuerteventura, Capt. Victor had several good fishing trips. Using small jigs, inchiku and soft bait he had some nice Sama in shallow water of 5 - 10kg (11lb - 23lb).
The Mediterranean Sea is warming up gradually and the fish is getting more and more active. There's quite some bait fish with lots of tuna. Due to the cold water (13°C in Northern Spain, 15°C towards the south) the predators a still a bit slow. When you try to approach the hunting tuna they hide immediately. Also, they are not concentrated, so you see some tuna jumping over here, then a few others over there. Very difficult for casting. Other species like dentex and amberjack are active around rocky areas. Oscar - fishing charter in Marbella - has been catching a lot of dentex in April in the area of Puerto Banus and Marbella. Juanma also had a couple of good days last month in the Gibraltar Strait.
In the Ebro Delta we're having the transition from winter to summer. We catch less sea bass and sander (in the river) and we're seeing the first bluefish and leerfish in salt water.
